Los Encuentros at Ballroom Marfa, Marfa, TX brings together the work of Justin Favela, Ozzie Juarez, Antonio Lechuga, Narsiso Martinez and Yvette Mayorga, Latinx artists working with the imagery and materials of everyday life to disrupt conventional notions of art history and to confront societal issues head on. Each artist is represented by large-scale works made from familiar materials to challenge traditional art spaces, push past limits, and engage us in dialogue about identity and community, often with humor. These artworks transcend artificial boundaries between craft, painting, and sculpture, blurring the lines of visual languages and destabilizing our expectations. The artists create work that is deeply personal, inclusive, and resonant with their own experiences, while addressing class, borders, and culture. For Los Encuentros, each artist is responding to Marfa—as a hallowed site for art world luminaries, as a border town, and as a place where the art world ethos is juxtaposed with everyday lived experience.
